I always saw a parent/child relationship. the 'little clone/souvenir' parable being indicative of someone who grew up to have a child not because they wanted to be a parent but because they were under the social expectations they grew up with to have one.
The backlash of the song then able to be this child that is trying so very hard to be perfect to please a parent that will never be happy and where perfect is not good enough.
I agree there is definitely a consistent theme of a relationship where one person is changed to please someone that will never be happy anyways. Maybe it's a metaphor for all manner of relationships like that.
