This little piece of communist propaganda was obviously written to be a Coke jingle that the beverage giants passed on, so they changed a couple of lines and put it on the album. To fill it out, songwriter Glenn Frey took parts from a song he had been working on for a death metal side project, with imagery of devils, voodoo, and midnight orgies with death and screaming. The record label and Jerry Falwell's ministry visited him in his Spanish villa and had him turn down the adult content, so the whipping and shagging becomes "hugging" which brilliantly rhymes with chugging. Of course the content didn't really merge seamlessly with an advertisement for a soft drink repurposed as a love song, but he was under the gun from management to finish another song, and he even sings in the first verse that it makes no sense. The result is yet another epic genre-bending masterpiece in the Eagles' songbook!
