From what I can gather, this song refers heavily upon the story of the Stripling Warriors from the Book of Alma in The Book Of Mormon. And there is a line from “Come, Come Ye Saints”
The basic story is that there were two groups, the Nephites and Lamanites. The Nephites were free but there were people who wanted to instate a king. It caused a lot of issues and the Lamanites fought the Nephites, but a group of Lamanites swore to never fight and came on the side of the Nephites. It came to a point they wanted to defend the Nephites freedom, but swore not to fight, so their sons fought valiantly for them. These were the 2000 stripling warriors.
Alma 56:19 “And thus were we favored of the Lord; for had they come upon us in this our weakness they might have perhaps destroyed our little army; but thus were we preserved.” Alma 56:47 “Now they never had fought, yet they did not fear death; and they did think more upon the liberty of their fathers than they did upon their lives; yea, they had been taught by their mothers, that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them.” Alma 51:8 “Now those who were in favor of kings were those of high birth, and they sought to be kings; and they were supported by those who sought power and authority over the people.”
