What the artist means
She just wants to know how she could stay faithful, loyal, happy, and joyous while he remains as faithful as he once was. She's crooning so softly, which masks the pain that she's been feeling lately. She's been up to so much good, but now she's covered in the loving of her lover (whether good or bad). He wants her to himself, even though it's clear that he can't measure up to her not so huge standards. All she wants is reciprocated love, she wants him to invest as much in this as she does. She still loves those beautiful moments that they stole, she's still living in the better days, even though those days seem long gone. Now she's covered in him, now she's covered in all his empty promises, and there seems to be no way out.
What the song means to me
Unreciprocated or unrequited love is simply the worst; however, manipulation comes a not so distant second in the list of scum worthy behaviors. Taylor is calling out an ex-lover guilty of this, and in turn, she's warning Kings and Queens everywhere that they deserve so much better. The production on this track is deceptively soft, you wouldn't know the huge importance of the track if you don't look deep enough. The track is an eye-opener, it exposes so many red flags, and there are so many meaningful messages here. I will give this song a rating of 8/10.
