I think this song could take on multiple meanings, and I'll elaborate on a two of them. First, I think this is a break up song, and could apply specifically to a romantic relationship. The music video seems to suggest this as well. It seems the romantic relationship is falling apart due to a second non-romantic relationship. The obvious choice for the non-romantic relationship is being a member of The Killers. The narrator doesn't know what to say to his SO, saying that it's harder than you think to draw clear boundaries that prevent The Killers from taking up all of his time leaving little for his family. He tries to walk away from his responsibilities as a band member but the fact that being in a high caliber band was his dream causes him to hesitate and getting drawn back into the grind of tour/album/tour. When he is able to get away from the band he tries to hide and break off contact, but the band always knows how to find him and get in touch. The narrator feels like he's in an impossible situation because it's never like they say, meaning very few people have accurately described the feelings and emotions he's experiencing trying to balance work/family. He wants to break free of the constant give and take between band and family, because he feels like he's emotionally holding on by a thread, but the thread doesn't break, making it more akin to a wire. And therein lies the problem, he wants make a decision between band and family, but can't bring himself to do it, resulting in SO making things right in a reckless manner.

Alternatively, it could be about drug addiction. His SO can't tolerate drugs/alcohol around the family, but the narrator has an addiction he's thus far been unable to overcome.
