I always thought this song was about Layne Staley's death. The title could be a reference to AIC's song "Rain When I Die" from Dirt. Sully obviously looked up to Layne, and the band's name comes from an AIC song. I see the lines about loneliness as referring to Layne isolation in his later years, and dying alone. Layne lost himself in addiction, and no matter what people did, he couldn't get himself out and clean. I think this song is a farewell to someone Sully idolized. But that's just my interpretation.
