In Jason Derulo’s “Savage Love” I feel like it can be looked at in different ways. I see the first verse as this person is head over heels in love with this girl. However, he finds out that she’s only with him because she wanted to get back at her ex-boyfriend. Towards the end of the verse he says, “I know she creepin' I feel it in the air” which I interpret as she is still seeing the ex because the singer can’t get her to stay with him. A lot of times in today’s culture we use the word savage to describe someone who is brutal. I think that’s exactly what he means when he calls her love savage. He knows she is only there to break another person’s heart but he doesn’t care because he loves her. I think in the second verse we see that she begins to take advantage of his love for her.
I think there’s a couple of things that make this song relatable. We all have been with or known someone who was using us for our love or for our money. I think Jason really hit home when he says “Every night and every day I try to make you stay but your savage love. Did somebody, did somebody break your heart?” The song hits on the point of view of being in love with someone who doesn’t feel the same. However, I think it also reminds us that the person that is breaking our heart was broken at some point too. I think the song overall is about a toxic relationship and how people stay in them even though they’re not getting any real love in return.
I think this song is important because in the dating scene today we see a lot of toxic traits in relationships. People say things like “I’m exclusive to you” meaning I’m still looking for someone, but I’ll stick with you for a while. Once these words are spoken, I feel like the other person is constantly trying to prove why they deserve your love. No one wants to be in a relationship where they are not loved back, but we continue to try to prove why we should be no matter the cost. This song sheds light on the pain it can cause when you use another person and the toxic traits that are created with it.
