This song is most likely about the character Eustace Scrubb from "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," by C.S. Lewis, the fifth book in the Chronicles of Narnia series. In the story, Eustace acts greedy and is turned into a dragon. Upon looking at his reflection in the water, he was ashamed and horrified, hence "when I saw my reflection, it was a stranger beneath my face." He is turned back to human by Aslan once he learned his lesson, and the lion had him bathe in a pool of clear water after taking off his scales, "when I touch the water, they tell me I could be set free."
