One interpretation is that she is singing to a lesbian lover who is leaving her for a man. However that is unlikely because that would mean Cher is singing about losing a man too, so are they really lesbians?

He is the man she met ("when you meet a boy") who is leaving and breaking her heart and warning him that his new male lover may do the same thing to him. This is plausible and fun to think, but not sure if this song aimed at adult Big Band style, was that progressive back in the early 1970's.
