This song is so freaking cool. Clearly about a near death experience that changed him. If the lyrics are to be taken literally, he almost drowned to death.

“Thought I’d say dying black, but I saw burning red” -instead of everything going black like expected, he saw red. Burning red could be interpreted as anger rather than peace.

This juxtaposition of anger/“full speed anticipation” and peace/“twilight drives pacify” is reflected throughout the song both musically and lyrically. During the slow breakdown, it seems to reflect that moment in near death experiences where the person accepts their fate and everything slows down.

“I came back different” -something about this line is so evocative. In a literal sense, it shows that this near death experience changed his perspective. But I interpret this whole song as a display of how trauma and adversity change you. Doesn’t have to be near death. My cat just died at 5, my poor little baby and his last year of suffering as I tried to save him was horrifying for me. His death also brought peace to him and myself cause I don’t have to worry about him anymore. This song has brought me some comfort even though I know it has nothing to do with this.
