So i know it's been a while since anybody checked this song's comments but i would like to give it my thoughts.
I recently finished a series called Bojack Horseman, and this song is the one that the series ends with.
I would have thought the same about the lyrics if i had already heard it before, but after the scene in which it plays, i think it can have, at least, another meaning.
It's about moving on, yes, but moving on from a friend.
In life we are always changing, and through that process, we sometimes meet people that are in a hole, and sometimes we find those people when we also are in a hole.
And sometimes, they get out of it first or the other way around.
The thing is, i think the song is talking about saying goodbye to that one person who that has issues not because we don't want to help them, but because we want to help us.
We love them, because they were with us through all the journey of pain and maybe we even got help from them and we wanna help them but, now that we are out, we can see that their hole is deeper than ours, and that trying to help them it's been causing us to fall again.
We love them, and because of it, be have to kiss them goodbye.
With love them for what they were to us. For what they gave us in hard times and the moments that we had together.
But now we have to keep going, because perhaps, that's the only way they can get out, and we can get going.
