Gabrielle Lyrics

Most of the comments so far seem to sugest this song is about a guy asking for forgiveness after a bad argument. I always thought it was a bit darker than that. Based on the lyrics:

"The sun is shining in your eyes"

amd

"Some times I feel like my old man, you know that's hard for me to say"

Another term for a black eye is a shiner, I always though "the sun is shining in your eyes" was a reference to the physical abuse this man has wrought upon Gabrielle. This I thought was enforced by the line about feeling like his old man and that being difficult for him. It sugests he behaves like his father who he clearly has contempt for, likely due to abuse he or his mother endured from him. I don't know if I'm reading in to it to far though.

The whole song seems to be the guy making the kind of piffy excuses an abuser would make to his abused spouse.

Just my take but I would like to know if any one else think it's about a physically abusive relationship?

My Interpretation

@Dorrato OMG YES!! Thank you finally, I thought it was just me! I thought of it right away when he said "the foundation of my malevolence" and "a man can sometimes be that way" and then the more I listened the song the more it seemed to line up. Great observation!
