On the surface, this song invokes longing and seems like a love song. It’s not. The song is about drug addiction. Richard Butler is quoted as saying that was the meaning of the song. (See Wikipedia) I was lucky enough to meet the Furs backstage; I think this is a classic for that period. But just like their other hit “The Ghost in You” their music is never what it seems. Incidentally, The Ghost in You was about how consumed the press was with Princess Diana and was written years before she died. (Ironic) The Psychedelic Furs even chose their name because Psychedelic anything in those punk days was so not cool. So this hauntingly beautiful tune is about drugs.
“Until she comes again
With all my savings and my sins
There's no good reason to begin.”
