I agree with jetroutm - Rea actually says it’s about driving past your home town without calling in when he introduces the song on some old bbc footage. I think he’s also observing how small the piece of the world he grew up in actually is in the scheme of things. The lyrics above aren’t correct - after the 3rd verse it’s “there it goes”, as he’s watching it rip by at speed. I’d guess that takes place on the A19, which isn’t the most obvious route south but a one he’d probably be drawn to having left Middlesbrough some years before the song was written.
