The first part of the song, up to the background spoken word, is just about rising above a bad upbringing. When you grow up, you have to let go of some of the stuff holding you back. It's the only way to really find love in the world, even if you're screaming inside from all the damage done to you.

The spoken work part is largely autobiographical. Doug Pinnick had a very lonely childhood, raised by a "fire & brimstone" preaching grandmother who constantly berated him and told him that nobody loves him and that's why both his parents abandoned him. There are other songs where he alludes to his past: Over My Head and also Picture are a couple.

But he's saying that he's proof that you can rise above. "Happy endings are no just for TV" because you can find happiness after a rough beginning. It does no good to point the finger after a certain point, because you've just gotta work on yourself, internally.
