I'm fairly certain Stephan has said this song was a tribute to Kurt Cobain [hence the sampled/fx-treated Bowie riff from The Man Who Sold The World that Nirvana famously covered not so long before Kurt's death]. Knowing that, it seems to me that the lyrics are about Kurt just wanting to be the person in the audience at that point, them idolizing him, him taking his life, therefore showing he's as vulnerable as anyone, not some rock god, and also asking "do you really still want this?"
