I interpret this to be from the perspective of someone who cares about another person who is isolated (on your island), unpredictable (there's no weather warning), and in pain (carry you for aching). The speaker has also contemplated the possibility of their own pain (what I would do if one day I woke up and couldn't find the color in anything.) It seems to indicate that the speaker is trying to help mend or carry the person they are talking to, perhaps this is why they bring up what they would do if they couldn't find "the color in anything": to offer insight and problem solve for the other person. However it seems like the other person is "not trying" like the speaker is, who eventually comes to the conclusion "I can't always help you." The speaker sees themselves as chasing the supposed glory of helping someone, so there's this juxtaposition of seeing themselves as trying so hard and really caring but also some self deprecation in realizing there was some anticipated reward coming from the supposed selflessness.
I feel like in the end this is a song about letting go of something or someone you can't help, even with all your good intentions (were they even all that good?)
I love this song.
