Was that simply a general critique of American marketing or was there really someone from Arizona who started the Boy King craze?

Byy saying he was "born in Arizona," he's making an excuse for Americans to be so interested in a guy they would otherwise have nothing in common with... for humorous purposes.

Let me give you a different example... I'm from Kansas. There are people here who love the Eagles because Joe Walsh was born in Wichita. The fact that he was literally only born here and departed immediately has no effect on their affection for him. Kind of the same thing, but with King Tut.
