She was part of the duo Kate & Anna McGarrigle with her big sister Anna, and both were very good friends of Emmylou's since they learned to kniw eachother in the 1980s. Kate died from cancer in 2010, and this song was Emmylou's response. In interviews, she has said she was actually there and kissed her brow as she died.
