It may seem like a stretch but the fact that Bonnie and Clyde met in 1929-1930 and that they are robbing banks in the lyrics makes me think that is the case. Also Highway 29 was frequently used by them although they died on a rural road. I think the last part is explaining how they were ambushed and how the car was completely shot to shit and most of the windows were blown out.
