"Are we here to say goodbye?" From the first verse onwards, it appears the song is depicting a situation in which a couple is on the verge of breaking up. Th guy appeals to her and wishes to be given one more "chance to shine" in her heart but he realizes he also deserves whatever cold treatment he's getting from her. So he's happy just being in the girl's "car boot" if it means he's still with her.

"And I am curious as to why you're so furious And I know your moods are serious" The guy doesn't know why the girl is furious and angry at him so he tries to wrap his head around it. He also knows the girl has heard some rumours about him which account for her behavior. He obviously wants to clarify the situation because he feels he's being wronged but the girl doesn't appear to be very receptive.

"What's that in your bag, dear? I hope it's just a kiss (...) I hope that's not a hammer, I pray it's just a rose"

Towards the end of the song, though it is hinted throughout, a dark edge is more apparent in the relationship. The mention of the hammer, of the guy feeling cold on the grass, is enough to speculate that the girl is furious enough to have a violent outburst. The listener understands by the end that the birthday girl is mad because her boyfriend forgot about it. He is regretting it deeply but cannot make up for it in the end.
