Sheep Among Wolves Lyrics

On the surface, this is a song about a werewolf. But seeing as this was written by a christian band, I'm guessing it goes deeper.

My thought is that the werewolf is a metaphor for the Holy Spirit and the song is about Pentecost, when the Spirit descended on the Apostles after Jesus died and they became on fire for God and went out and preached despite the fact that there was a bounty on their heads. "Sheep among wolves" is mentioned in the bible in Matthew 10:16 "I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves." This is in the context of Matthew 10:1 "Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness." He was sending them out to various towns to spread the good news but warning them to be careful. After Jesus died, his Apostles went out again preaching the good news in similar fashion.

In regards to the song, the guy has been taken over with the passion and fire of the Holy Spirit and has gone out seeking converts (getting "kills"). Jesus used a metaphor of fishermen catching fish to relay the same idea.

"Crawl along with me into savage memories" "Reach into the past for a moment here with me" He is reckoning back to ancient memories (of the first Pentecost?).

He takes "form against flames" which could be another reference to the Holy Spirit as it is often depicted as a tongue of fire.

He also says the "spirit still lives inside of you" letting you know the Spirit of God is in you too.

I think it's interesting also how he flips the imagery of Matthew 10:16 from the disciples being sheep among the wolves to instead now the protagonist is the wolf and everyone else are sheep. Back then, the disciples had to be shrewd so they wouldn't be jailed, or worse, for spreading Jesus' message. But with this flip on the imagery, we see that the disciples were actually the ones with the power...
