It's about animal rights. The line "the cry of the beast is just the noise of a spring" is from the philospher Descartes, who believed that only humans posessed consciousness, and that animals were only machines that experienced no pain or fear. The song goes on to note how we still treat animals as unfeeling objects for our use, despite the fact that modern biology and genetics proves that humans and other animals are all related. The Mechanist could conceivably be the "clockmaker" concept of God proposed by Descartes and other early Rationalists. It could also be the philospher who believes in the mechanistic view of animals and nature.

I searched for this song because I was curious after hearing it if any of the band members were involved in animal rights. Unfortunately, I couldn't really find any place where they discussed the song.

@Damiana It is about animal rights. I found an interview with the singer (who also wrote the song): https://www.metalinsider.net/interviews/interview-delains-charlotte-wessels-says-new-album-is-a-fresh-start
