Simply, it is a song about a homeless man that is about to die amidst harsh living conditions, and has accepted his fate. The person (singer) discovers him and motions to save his life, which irritates the homeless man.

One could interpret the basic philosophy of the song to be that the man felt that dying was a more preferable fate than continuing to live out the rest of his life, which was likely very hard and full of tragedy and hardships for him.

The part of the song where he describes running around the barn and being called by his mom was probably meant to symbolize the man finally getting the opportunity to reunite with his [dead] parents in the afterlife, something he yearned for. The mom telling him to hurry up might have been her spirit telling him to pass on and join up with her and her husband. The dad packing up the car might have been meant to symbolize the singer’s will to “move on” and pass into the next life.

Oh, and another thing. The lines of the chorus may be meant to symbolize a number of very hard events in the man’s life. He goes from running from honey bees to passing an untended field- a sort of bitter-sweet but peaceful conclusion to his life.
