With lines like, "hide your shakes", "I never was a good judge of when to call it a night", I think it's clearly about alcoholism. Alcoholics also tend to surround themselves with like-minded alcoholic friends too, which is shown with the "let's get enabled, great minds they think alike" line. The lines,"some things we lost are never to be found", and "some things go south and they never turn around" could represent the downward spiral and depression that comes with addiction.
