This song has a much deeper meaning than just "get up and dance"! This is a song from the black community to the black community durring the rise of the great industrial era of post WW2. This was a call to the more afluent northern black people to reach out to their poorer southern people (the barefoot" south share cropper) to get them to join the northern blacks in the prosperity of the growing nation and step away from the Jim Crow south!
