I came here also hoping someone else gave it a go... but since that's not happening, here's my thought:
From what I gather they're definitely a couple that's splitting up.
"Stood at the cold face / Stood with our backs to the sun" - they both looked at things negatively
"I can remember being nothing but fearless and young" - they're older now, changed
"We've become echoes, but echoes, they fade away / We've fallen to the dark as we dive under the waves" - (said by his partner) they said they're estranged or no longer compatible, maybe a long-distance relationship or something else heavily strained their relationship. the partner thinks they've grown apart
"The devil's on your shoulder . . . " - after so many years something's changed with them? maybe something changed very quickly
"Let's go out in flames . . ." - let's go out with a bang (puns intended)
Couple breaking up because something's changed and there's strife between them, and they decide to have one last "dance".
