Lyric discussion by Guszak

Andy doesn't ever write simple songs and people that perceive this one to be simple and straightforward are kidding themselves. I think the song is definitely an agnostic take. He is attacking the nonsense of religion, but at the same time, addressing it to a deity that he says he doesn't believe in. In the end, it is a man that wants to believe, but sees no reason to believe, yet, still is trying to see if there is some slim chance that his words are being heard.

@Guszak The song is a caustic comment on the book \'Letters to God\', in which children were asked (coerced?) to write letters to the Deity. AP regarded this as a form of child abuse. It is also, in his own words, himself bidding farewell to the last vestiges of his beliefs.
