I think the song is about a new relationship that is beginning ("Can you remind me the building you live in"). He wants it to grow - "Meet me in the stairwell" - could be a metaphor for an invitation to move some steps up in the relationship. "Nobody else will be there then" means there will be just them two, either because he longs to be alone with her ("I need you alone"), because no one else knows about them, or even because he wants her to know she doesn't have to worry about others girls or third parties, he only wants her.

The second part suggests he is in a very fragile state ("My faith is sick and my skin is thin as ever") or has been through some rough times - "Hey baby, where were you back then? / When I needed your hand" - this could mean that he needs her and that the wished he could have met her earlier, when he was going through his difficuld times.

Anyway, it's an exciting new relationship - he is willing to go to her house even though it's cold and they never want to say goodbye whenever they are together.
