This song is all about a relationship and how they compare themselves with other couples they know or have heard of. When they state 'you and I have been here and countless others' they are expressing that although they are not working, arguing and obviously other issues...that many have also been where they are and all have worked out fine "They have broken through". They see it as a stage of every relationship, but now they are starting to realise its gone on for longer than expected or seen in other couples.. their efforts and sacrifices to make it work have started to 'blister' and it leaves the question of how long is to long to try?

Which they believe...Is when its truly gone...when what they had in the start is 'truly' unreachable again that's the time to give up. Now Badboys in every movie are cool, unique they usually have some dark tormented past that led them to who they are..different then the entire nation of good boys. They see other couples as the good ones... they follow the normal trend of a relationship, they got out of that stage they didn't get stuck so they have decided they must be the bad boys as they got stuck in the torment of the past, never forgiving but always trying...

the only thing is...the bad boys never win and they express that by their harsh comparison of themselves with 'yellow' to 'gold'... they use extended metaphors through out of getting old....not themselves but the relationship and as we know the 'golds' can last years and years. Sadly they are not the same..yellow will rust and decay...they will never be as powerful in love as the good ones.
