I think that the singer is in love ( Not just love, madly in love) with someone, but he just doesn't want to let them know or at least he doesn't have the courage to say it to them. Probably because he is afraid that the other person doesn't love him back and he doesn't have the strength to handle the rejection. So he just wants to leave things as it is, where neither say anything to each other and so, no one will ever know if they could have been together.

My Interpretation

@Quentintarantiny I too think the singer is madly, deeply in love. But I don't think it's the case that he doesn't want to tell them. I think it's more that the love is so deep that words can only cheapen it. Their connection is so strong that speech/words can only limit it. Some of the lines in this song:

The silence was much better Look in your eyes a sign Our thoughts all blend together

The feeling was just being Nothing but time for us Our thoughts all lose their meaning.

@Quentintarantiny I think he’s dreading the idea of proposing. Or I could see him struggling with the idea of professing love even during physical lovemaking.
