I think that the singer is in love ( Not just love, madly in love) with someone, but he just doesn't want to let them know or at least he doesn't have the courage to say it to them. Probably because he is afraid that the other person doesn't love him back and he doesn't have the strength to handle the rejection. So he just wants to leave things as it is, where neither say anything to each other and so, no one will ever know if they could have been together.

Personally, I find so much beauty in this song and its lyrics because it succeeds in describing an indescribable feeling that (a) I've only felt on a couple of special occasions and (b) you can't summon. It requires another person with whom eye contact is out-of-body elating. This always requires I push the more immediate fear aside.
