can't stress the mexican war too much, interesting that he also brings up the war of 1812 in "if i can't work up to you..." but regarding the line "still looking along the trigger"....I hear the line as "still pulling on the trigger" (hanging on the best I can) which gives the thought craziness but it makes more sense than "looking along". you don't look along the trigger, although I suppose that is even more crazy, if you were to. 'pulling on the trigger' also suggests doing something, acting, taking a shot. the 'hanging on the best i can" is a nice understatement, he's doing a little better than that.
