When I first heard this song without looking through the lyrics, I thought the song was describing the insanity that is fame, or becoming famous. "Cinema starring, bright light picture show" and "Dreams about gold" seems to hint at that.
The proper lyrics at the end of the chorus go "A dream we dream" not "Dream the dream". And that is something that many secretly or maybe not so secretly dream about: being famous.
Though now that I actually look at the lyrics, it may have a different meaning altogether. The "Twenty pine boxes stacked to the side" still puzzles me...
