In my opinion I’ve been listening to this song since I was 12 and its always meant the same thing to me:
Basically he’s poor as a beginning rock star but he’s leaving his home town on a train, leaving his Mom behind to chase his dreams. He’s talking in past tense with “it’s been a long time” so at the time of writing the song he’s already “made it”. It’s a motivating song to me about him taking a huge chance to be successful but it clearly works out for him.
