A Plea for Tenderness Lyrics

Lyric discussion by Nothingfancyjustnecromancy

To me this song reveals the immaturity and selfishness of being young and in love. You don't have any idea what it means to love or how to have a genuine connection with someone. All you want is to feel loved. You don't want to actually know her, you want her to know you. He doesn't care about your life, or your job, or school. He doesn't care about your aspirations, or your personal space. He assumes you have issues because you no longer want to be with him, thinks you're an addictict and you're not thinking clearly. He doesn't care about you, he just wants to feel loved and he's terrified of being alone. He believes you will "go to waste" if you're not with him. He can't see you clearly because he can only see himself. It's extremely relatable and I appreciate the raw honesty. Richman is both a comedian and an incredibly talented artist. He understands and has genuine perspective on this kind of relationship. He uses that understanding to show the rawness and vulnerability of love, while also making fun of how shallow, immature, and hypocritical he is. So much so that he says he doesn't care about her, but begs her to give him genuine love and affection.
