I have a friend who has done DMT a few times and found it to be amazing, and I've always been curious about it. She has offered to take me to a DMT ceremony (or tea party as they call it) and be my guide. This song makes me think of that.
DMT is a chemical that occurs naturally in the human body (among other plays), and is supposedly released to the brain at birth and at death. Perhaps it's a doorway in to the "afterlife" or whatever comes after dying (or before being born). When I hear the song, that is what "the unknown that surrounds you" is -- the experience of DMT. A greater connection to things outside of ourselves, or to nature: "the branches of the trees, they will hang lower now."
Another thing many people have said they have experienced during DMT trips are encounters with other beings/entities. The line "When they knocked on the door looking for you" makes me think of that.
