When I was a senior in high school, I had a crush on this girl. She turned down my offers to a date. One day I asked her friend out. To my surprise she said yes. We had dinner at a candle light tavern where a musician played and sang "House on Pooh Corner." During the date, the girl wasn't very open. But when that song was sung, and another Seals and Crofts song was sung she suddenly opened up and we had a good time. I liked her and wanted to see her again, but it seems she just served to investigate what type of person I really was for her friend (the one that kept turning me down.) Subsequently, I went on to seek other romances but after a while the girl I dated really started opening up to me. It seems that many girls (and guys) are in a desperate rush to find a mate, like the way it happens at a dance "before the music ends." She was probably no exception and was promised or setup by her parent's approval for some boring, hard-working dude. So this song represents a lost of that child like innocence and freedom to choose your lifelong partner without deadline pressure following high school. I'm sure many people can relate to this having said what I said when they hear this song.
