I had a very different idea about the meaning to this song than the other comments. To me this was him singing to a child he is fostering/adopting, possibly from an abusive home. He is saying, "I know that you have grown to know a life where your caregiver hurts you, gets drunk (and pisses on their bed), is ungrateful, and does not love you, but do you mind if i do not do those things?" I think it is a very beautiful way of welcoming a child into your life, and asking their permission to help them.
He asks if the child approves of him and what he wears and does.
I take the line "Are you angry the you I'm adopting, Is only a pretense at home" literally.
The definition of pretense is "an attempt to make something that is not the case appear true." He is saying " Are you angry that I try to pretend this is your home, even though you do not feel that is true"
The last paragraph is a little harder for me to figure out, but I think that is becasue it is about a specific person. The last couple lines, however, are clear.
"Do you mind for I think I still love you
Do you mind
Always have
Evermore"
