This song is about a set of parents, who have now divorced. They are trying to explain to their oldest child, their song, how the divorce is for the best and how he has gotta believe them.

"Come home early after class. Don't be hanging 'round the back of the schoolyard. I've been called up by a teacher. She says she can't even reach you 'cause you're so far You've been talking with your fist. We didn't raise you up like this, now did we"?

This is saying how the parents are concerned about how this is affecting their son. How he is fighting after school in the schoolyard. They explain how this is not how they raised him.

"It don't make sense, but nevertheless. You gotta believe us, it's all for the best. It don't make sense. The way things go."

The parents are explaining to him that it doesn't make sense for him, but this is all for the best and it will make things better in the long run.

"Son you should know... Sometimes moms and dads fall out of love. Sometimes two homes are better than one. Some things you can't tell your sister 'cause she's still too young. Yeah you'll understand... When you love someone".

They explain that not all love works out, and sometimes, being separated is better for everyone. How he cannot tell his little sisters because she is still too young, and how that he will understand someday when he loves someone himself.

"There ain't no one here to blame. Nothing's going to change with your old friends. Your room will stay the same. 'Cause you'll only be away on the weekends".

They explain to him that this is no one's fault and that life is just better off this way. And that his life will still be the same, and that the only difference will be going away to see another parent on the weekends.

"It don't make sense but nevertheless, You gotta believe us, it's all for the best. It don't make sense, It don't add up, We'll always love you no matter what".

Again, explaining to him that this may be so sudden and does not make sense to him, but that this break up will not change how much both of them (the parents) love and care for him.

"Sometimes moms and dads fall out of love. Sometimes two homes are better than one. Some things you can't tell your sister 'cause she's still too young. Yeah you'll understand. When you love someone... When you love someone..."

Same as the third paragraph.

"Come home early after class. Don't be hanging 'round the back of the schoolyard. And if we're crying on the couch, Don't let it freak you out. This has been so hard."

This is them explaining to him that he must stop this bad behavior at school, to avoid the trouble of fighting and that when he comes home and hears the fighting and crying, to not let it trouble him. And to not make this divorce change who he is, that this has been hard for all of us.

"Sometimes moms and dads fall out of love. Sometimes the best intentions just ain't enough. Some things you can't tell your sister 'cause she's still too young. Yeah you'll understand... When you love someone. When you love someone. When you love someone. When you love someone."

Same as 3rd and 6th paragraph beside that one line "Sometimes the best intentions just ain't enough". This is saying that the parents(s) feel as if their best efforts for their family and children still is not enough for them and it feels to only get worse when they try to fix their problem. (The problem is that family life at home includes lots of crying and unhappiness and the solution is divorce which only seems to make the son worse).

I really like this song, it is so emotionally moving and beautiful. Has lots of meaning to it and I feel like it relates to a lot of children going through this. That this song can help them get through it because their parents are too busy to tell them this message themselves. <3
