This song is about one of the most highly decorated WWII vets named Audie Murphy (first lieutenant). He received every U.S. award for Valor and the Belgian Croix de Guerre along with the French Croix de Guerre. He received other French awards too. He received the Medal of Honor at 19 for singlehandedly holding off an entire German company of soldiers at Colmar Pocket, France. A company of 50 Germans attacked Audie's platoon that he was commanding. The Germans got a direct hit on their M10 tank destroyer and set it on fire. Audie ordered his platoon into the woods and stoo on the flaming destroyer firing it's .50 cal machine gun for over an hour while the German foot soldiers and tanks targeted him. He suffered a leg wound yet only stopped when he ran out of ammo. He then regrouped and led his platoon on a successful counterattack.
Audie also had a 21-year acting career, which led to him playing himself in the autobiographical film "To Hell and Back". He also wrote some poetry and cowrote some songs with Scott Turner.
May 28,1971, he aircraft Audie was traveling in crashed due to zero visibility. Along with Audie, four other passengers and the pilot were killed. On June 7 he was buried in Arlington with full military honors.his headstone contains the false birth year 1924 due to him falsifying documents so he could enter the army early.
Audie suffered from PTSD and slept with a loaded handgun under his pillow. He took addicting sleep pills to try and negate nightmares.
