Reading all other interpretations, I couldn't help but share my own thoughts on this one. Massive props to In Flames for allowing so many detailed interpretations with the same lyrics!! \m/

This could be about a man doubting his relation with his long-time wife.

"Tried of dull ages, I walk the same ground, Collecting the tragedies still" Sick of his relationship as it is, keeping mental notes about the things that annoy him. "Hollow ambitions in a hollow mind carried my cross to the hill" The small dreams of his close-minded significant other is the thing that killed him inside.

"And how I lust for the dance and the fire Deep of the nectarine sunset to drink Spill me the wind and its fire To steal of the colors" " - I´m the moon shield " As others have pointed out, this expresses his desire for a much more free and fun life.

"Shattered hope became my guide And grief and pain my friends" Accepting his current situating, becoming somewhat depressed. "A brother pact in blood-ink penned Declared my silent end" This could refer to marriage, it will last forever and his final hopes to break free are now crushed.

"Naked and dying under worlds of silent stone Reaching for the moon shield that once upon us shone" No one else realises he is being crushed inside by his relationship (silent stone). Reaching for the moon shield makes known he cannot let go of his silent dreams to break free.
