I think he’s singing to a girlfriend that he is growing apart from. I think “paper dreams” refers to planning out their lives together and he mentions the suburbs etc. But she’s more invested in the relationship than he is and she had to go to his show just to hear about his day. He’d rather them both have independence though since he loves how “she moves in her own way”. He’s just looking out for himself
