I believe that this is a song about an incredibly difficult breakup that is hard to get over. They sing of some hope in the pre-chorus but they aren't there yet because they haven't healed yet I believe. They sing I don't need anyone because they know that they need to be alone to heal not make others unhappy as they are because that would be selfish. Lyric choice also suggests it's a messy breakup due to fire references and recklessness. Behaviour is also diturbed and disrupted from what one would consider normal and rational. The tone in which Matt especially reflects some helplessness and emotional pain due to the strain of just singing higher and his more shouty voice. Harmonies in the chorus help give a more desperate sound too. The low verse for Mark hitting more than an octave below middle C reflects in my eyes how low they feel. The bridge is sung towards the ex lover I believe and tells of how they are in a miserable pattern not helping potential depression I believe both parties are experiencing. The use of the word oblivion at the end of each 3 bridge sections highlights how perhaps there is nothing there, just numbness and the emptiness they feel inside. Overall this song to me expresses a deep depression brought on from a terrible breakup most likely but while they try there best to carry on and move on they feel like it's a lost cause as if there is no improvement or escape. You feel very sorry for them and feel their despair which I believe makes this song so good as you feel their pain through the music so well
