In part, you lose a lot of hope ("downcast eyes") as the years go by. But at the same time, you still long to find that person, and a part of you still believes that you will, one day. So despite there being "no love left in [you]", you still say that you're "forever [theirs]" to that person.
But ultimately you don't have much hope left; hence "whatever walks in my heart will walk alone." There is no one to give your love to, but that doesn't make the love go away. Instead, all that love is just there, with no one to give it to.
It's been over two decades on this planet, and I still haven't found the girl I'm looking for. I sometimes doubt that I ever will. People tell me that my dreams are unrealistic, but I can't settle for anyone less than her, and my beautiful romance, so I might have to walk alone for the rest of my life.
