Cover art for Love lyrics by Lana Del Rey

Lana has stated that she made this album for her fans. I interpret the first single off the album, "Love," as an ode to Millennials, who make up a large chunk of her fanbase.

"Look at you kids with your vintage music Comin' through satellites while cruisin'"

This verse and the next line give a nod to Millennials being referred to as "the generation of nostalgia." I picture a group of friends driving down the road listening to old, vintage music on their smartphones via the internet, via satellites up in space.

"You're part of the past, but now you're the future Signals crossing can get confusing"

On one hand, Millennials are the last generation to have memories of existing in the world without computers, the internet, smartphones, etc., yet they are the first generation to grow up with and master these pieces of technology at fairly young ages - Millennials are partly past, partly future.

On the other hand, trends that we thought were buried in history are re-emerging in the present day; the world is struggling with intensifying racism, there are anxieties of a nuclear war, America in particular is in a very fragile political state. The past is repeating itself, but as Millennials are growing up, they will be in positions of power to change sad things going on in the world.

"Seen so much, you could get the blues But that don't mean that you should abuse it Though it's enough just to make you go crazy, crazy, crazy"

Millennials are becoming adults amidst the terrible things I mentioned above, but they were exposed to tragedies at young ages, as well. Growing up with horrible things seemingly being "the norm" (terrorist attacks, mass shootings) is enough to make anyone get the blues and feel crazy, but you can't give up. We need to keep going and do what we can to improve the world.

One last note - I think the line "young and in love" can mean more than love in the romantic sense. When you're young, you feel as though the world is yours, and there are endless possibilities that await you. Perhaps by being "young and in love," Lana means being in love with the potential that the world holds, or simply just showing love in general to a world that needs more of it.
