The way I see it, the crystal palace is referring to the place in the mountains, which I believe is a way of describing self-inflicted solitude; but in the following context:
Think of it like, if you feel the world seems unable to understand you, has become hostile, or in this case, both; you arm yourself with the understand of who you are and shut everyone else out. The outside, human world feels like it's warped into a less hospitable place than even the cold isolation of the mountains, where you've sought refuge. I believe the songs concept is based around something like that, but focuses on the ultimately destructive nature of coping in such a way on a couple different levels. Coping that way is beneficial in theory, but under less optimistic circumstances, can result in a slippery slope that leaves you hanging off of a cliff.. You are left even more vulnerable, and are at the mercy of mere circumstance.
At the same time, the song isn't suggesting a cause and effect on the coping mechanism alone. It is an experience that you live and don't have the resources needed at the time to solve your problems in any other way than that way, in the moment. Which I hope still makes sense.

Hopefully that makes any sense, at all.

Hence, why it is a 'journey'.
