The Partridge Family was actually written about The Cowsill's and was originally going to have the Cowsill's in the show, but the producers wanted Shirley to play the mom and the Cowsill kids said that they would not do the show with the replacement mom. As a side note, the dad wasn't dead. He was their manager and had been a Naval Officer. So he kept his kids in line strictly and used their musical talent as a family bond and to keep the kids always very busy and away from any trouble of that era! (The 60's!) As if you can keep teens out of trouble in the 60's!
