In modern-day language, this guy had the girl, knew that she liked him, but for whatever reason, he did not treat her like someone he was serious about. He probably decided to go "ghost" on her at some point, meaning losing contact with her because he thought that since she was a good girl, she would be waiting when he decided to return.
