In modern-day language, this guy had the girl, knew that she liked him, but for whatever reason, he did not treat her like someone he was serious about. He probably decided to go "ghost" on her at some point, meaning losing contact with her because he thought that since she was a good girl, she would be waiting when he decided to return. Meanwhile, when she does not hear from him over the course of a couple of weeks, she goes through some self-esteem issues wondering why he left her. Was there something wrong with her? What did she do that made him lose interest? The guy--realizing at some point, that he had something very special after his quest for finding something better doesn't yield any results--contacts the girl out of nowhere. She entertains him for a bit, but he never apologizes for the pain she went through, probably because he doesn't understand the depths of her pain. Everything seems fine for a day or two, but she no longer trusts him as he goes ghost and there are pockets of time where he can't be found. So, realizing she doesn't want this type of unstable love, she decides to let him go. Now, he is going crazy because he thought that he was God's gift to her, but in truth, it was the other way around.
