I have a different opinion from most on here. I think this song is talking more about putting a lot of effort into something just to realize it isn't gonna go anywhere, such as starting a band or trying to do well in school but getting bad grades anyways.

It don't amount up to anything."
That could just mean all of the work, stress, and effort he put in for nothing in return. To me the song just doesn't have enough references to death or suicide to really be all about that, it feels like a jump to a conclusion for me. The guy simply is tired of putting effort into something that isn't reaping rewards like it maybe once did (like in the time he rewinds to).
