First, for those of you doing the obligatory "I don't care what it means, it just kicks ass," then you really probably shouldn't have bothered logging in at "songmeanings.com" to tell us that. If you don't care what it means... you're obviously in the wrong place. You took a lot of time and effort, and cared A LOT, to come all the way here and tell us you "don't care," lol.
Secondly... it really doesn't have any of the meanings you guys below think it does (sorry). It's not about his "wife" or about the name "Foo Fighters" or any of that...
Dave used to write lots of cool songs without deep hidden meanings. This one is about a kid who was into model airplanes. He wanted to wow all the kids on his block with his new amazing purchase, which was a HUGE model airplane. He's really upset, because there isn't ENOUGH SPACE on the ceiling to make it work.
That's it. That's all.
"Lily" is what he named the airplane (or maybe the name it had on the box it came in). It was "the best (he'd) ever seen." He was waiting for "flying machines" (i.e. he was looking for some kind of airplane to put on his ceiling). "People line up to see," because he's a KID, and all the kids on the block are coming to see the new massive airplane he's got. But there never seems to be enough space. So that's why he screams "ENOUGH SPAAAAAAAAAACE!!!"
It's a great song because it's NOT about "That time Dave was going through a divorce, and blah blah blah." In fact... it's genius.
